Or, Who Killed Everybody and Who Cares
A rather silly murder mystery with a number of murders and little mystery- certainly not a horror film. Iy contains all the stock characters of the "old
...
dark house" genre - an old curse on the owner of a stolen treasure, who is now cursed and wheelchair bound, the others who should have benefited from his archaeological discoveries - actually the theft in question - including a mild-mannered man and his domineering wife, the motor-mouthed, full of himself insurance salesman, and a few others - a beautiful nurse who takes care of the invalid - a beautiful Hindu girl and housekeeper who was the invalid's lover at the time of the theft - incompetent local policemen - a witless handyman working on the heating system who wanders around the house, a stuffed ape and, evidently a real ape. Not all these people are as they seem - that's the mystery - is there a murderer among them or is there really an ape killing people. Also through is secret passages, a seance and a love story. What you wind up with is a tepid mishmash of a film.

Nice one. Don´t ask for credibility
I liked the absent-minded Professor and his dominant wife, I liked the more than stupid police officer (although he acted a bit over the top). There are
...
some lacks of credibility in the motivations of some figures. Not that I expected to believe everything what happened but many films of this kind have some sort of "inside credibility" (I mean, in the world of the movie anything is believable which is absolutely unbelievable in real life or in movies categorized as A movies), this one has not.

watch and smile
This is a way over the top B picture spoof on the well worn "old dark house/who's doing the killings" theme and I defy anyone not to watch it without a

smile. A good role for that old stalwart Irving Bacon as the bumbling detective and interesting to see western icon George "Gabby" Hayes all dressed up in suit and tie.

House of Mystery 1934
What a lot of fun! The story is familiar. The plot is a bit thin but the total film is just fun to watch. Good viewing for kids too. The English nurse

and the Scotland Yard detective both had American accents. The plumber is a riot. Other than that, it was a pleasure to see this film and I'm glad it's been preserved.

downloaded the 690MB DivX file. The video is good for a VHS rip, though vertical lines are wavy. The audio is fine.
